    Neural blackboard architectures of combinatorial structures in cognition

    Human cognition is unique in the way in which it relies on combinatorial (or compositional) structures. Language provides ample evidence for the existence of combinatorial structures, but they can also be found in visual cognition. To understand the neural basis of human cognition, it is therefore essential to understand how combinatorial structures can be instantiated in neural terms. In his recent book on the foundations of language, Jackendoff described four fundamental problems for a neural instantiation of combinatorial structures: the massiveness of the binding problem, the problem of 2, the problem of variables and the transformation of combinatorial structures from working memory to long-term memory. This paper aims to show that these problems can be solved by means of neural ‘blackboard’ architectures. For this purpose, a neural blackboard architecture for sentence structure is presented. In this architecture, neural structures that encode for words are temporarily bound in a manner that preserves the structure of the sentence. It is shown that the architecture solves the four problems presented by Jackendoff. The ability of the architecture to instantiate sentence structures is illustrated with examples of sentence complexity observed in human language performance. Similarities exist between the architecture for sentence structure and blackboard architectures for combinatorial structures in visual cognition, derived from the structure of the visual cortex. These architectures are briefly discussed, together with an example of a combinatorial structure in which the blackboard architectures for language and vision are combined.     Connectivity between coastal habitats of two oceanic Caribbean islands as inferred from ontogenetic shifts by coral reef fishes

    Mangroves and seagrass beds are considered important nursery habitats for juveniles of coral reef fishes. Studies have mostly focused on the fish community of just one habitat, so the connectivity between different coastal habitats is often unclear. In this study, density and size of reef fish were determined using a single sampling technique in four non-estuarine bay habitats and four reef zones in Curaçao and Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles). The data indicate that of the complete reef fish community at least 21 species show ontogenetic crossshelf shifts in habitat utilization. The 21 species mainly utilized shallow-water habitats (mangroves, seagrass beds, channel and shallow reef) as nursery habitats and the deeper coral reef zones (\u3e 5 m depth) as adult lifestage habitats. Fish species utilized 1–3 different nursery habitats simultaneously, but habitat utilization clearly differed between species. Previous studies showed that the dependence on these nursery habitats is very high, based on reduced density or absence of adults on coral reefs where these habitats were absent. The strong connectivity between several coastal habitats during the ontogeny of various commercially important reef fish species is evidence for the inclusion of bay habitats within boundaries of fishery reserves or marine protected areas

    For the shallow-water equations on an equatorial beta plane, the properties of low-frequency Rossby waves and (mixed) Rossby-gravity waves are investigated. It is shown that in the low-frequency limit the horizontal divergence of these solutions is zero and their geopotential satisfies = f, where f = y is the Coriolis parameter and is the stream function of the non-divergent velocity field. This type of balance is rather different from the geostrophic balance satisfied by Kelvin waves. It can be used to formulate a balanced potential vorticity equation in the single variable that, while filtering out Kelvin waves and inertia-gravity waves, exactly reproduces Rossby waves and Rossby-gravity waves in the low-frequency limit

    Labour-market in a border-area; searching for jobs and the influence of borders

    At the moment borders, border-related problems, and the process of tearing down borders are very much in the centre of interest. Especially in Europe a lot of scientific work is done with regard to borders of countries, to determine their role in the ongoing integration process. In this respect border-regions are considered to be able to play a catalytic role. The borderland economies on both sides of a national border in this view have to be changed into one transborder economy. Initiatives to encourage cross-border integration however are not always successful. To our opinion, one of the main reasons lies in the fact that the border has many faces. The effect of a border differs, depending on the type of interaction (e.g. economic, social-cultural or institutional) and the nature of the region it defines. This paper tries to formulate a conceptual framework, within which the different properties of borders and border-regions are taken into account. Next this model is applied to the regional labour-market in the Nijmegen-Arnhem border-area in the eastern part of the Netherlands. The most important questions to be answered are: - Are there effects stemming from the fact the regional labour-market in the Arnhem-Nijmegen is part of a (peripheral) borderland economy? - What are the effects of the border with regard to the interaction of the region Arnhem-Nijmegen with the neighbouring region in Germany? - Is a part of the "natural" labour-market cut off by the national border, or put in other words, what would happen if the Dutch-German border would disappear completely?     Organizing Multidisciplinary Care for Children with Neuromuscular Diseases

    The Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, recently opened the `Children's Muscle Center Amsterdam' (CMCA). The CMCA diagnoses and treats children with neuromuscular diseases. These patients require care from a variety of clinicians. Through the establishment of the CMCA, children and their parents will generally visit the hospital only once a year, while previously they visited on average six times a year. This is a major improvement, because the hospital visits are both physically and psychologically demanding for the patients. This article describes how quantitative modelling supports the design and operations of the CMCA. First, an integer linear program is presented that selects which patients to invite for a treatment day and schedules the required combination of consultations, examinations and treatments on one day. Second, the integer linear program is used as input to a simulation to study to estimate the capacity of the CMCA, expressed in the distribution of the number patients that can be seen on one diagnosis day. Finally, a queueing model is formulated to predict the access time distributions based upon the simulation outcomes under various demand scenarios

    Catchment-scale non-linear groundwater-surface water interactions in densely drained lowland catchments

    Freely discharging lowland catchments are characterized by a strongly seasonal contracting and expanding system of discharging streams and ditches. Due to this rapidly changing active channel network, discharge and solute transport cannot be modeled by a single characteristic travel path, travel time distribution, unit hydrograph, or linear reservoir. We propose a systematic spatial averaging approach to derive catchment-scale storage and discharge from point-scale water balances. The effects of spatial heterogeneity in soil properties, vegetation, and drainage network are lumped and described by a relation between groundwater storage and the spatial probability distribution of groundwater depths with measurable parameters. The model describes how, in lowland catchments, the catchment-scale flux from groundwater to surface water via various flow routes is affected by a changing active channel network, the unsaturated zone and surface ponding. We used observations of groundwater levels and catchment discharge of a 6.6 km2 Dutch watershed in combination with a high-resolution spatially distributed hydrological model to test the model approach. Good results were obtained when modeling hourly discharges for a period of eight years. The validity of the underlying assumptions still needs to be tested under different conditions and for catchments of various sizes. Nevertheless, at this stage the model can already improve monitoring efficiency of groundwater-surface water interaction

    A neural blackboard architecture of sentence structure

    We present a neural architecture for sentence representation. Sentences are represented in terms of word representations as constituents. A word representation consists of a neural assembly distributed over the brain. Sentence representation does not result from associations between neural word assemblies. Instead, word assemblies are embedded in a neural architecture, in which the structural (thematic) relations between words can be represented. Arbitrary thematic relations between arguments and verbs can be represented. Arguments can consist of nouns and phrases, as in sentences with relative clauses. A number of sentences can be stored simultaneously in this architecture. We simulate how probe questions about thematic relations can be answered. We discuss how differences in sentence complexity, such as the difference between subject-extracted versus object-extracted relative clauses and the difference between right-branching versus center-embedded structures, can be related to the underlying neural dynamics of the model. Finally, we illustrate how memory capacity for sentence representation can be related to the nature of reverberating neural activity, which is used to store information temporarily in this architecture
